About This Place

Simurgh Bakery & Cafe in Emeryville, CA, is a vibrant destination for those craving authentic Turkish and Mediterranean flavors in a cozy, inviting atmosphere. This charming restaurant seamlessly blends a traditional bakery with a full-service cafe, specializing in halal dishes that celebrate the rich culinary heritage of Turkey.

From the moment you step in, the aroma of freshly baked breads greets you—especially their exquisite Simit, the iconic Turkish sesame bagel, and the incredibly fluffy pide bread that pairs perfectly with their breakfast offerings. Customers repeatedly rave about these breads, calling them a rare authentic treasure in the Bay Area that instantly transports you to the bustling streets of Istanbul.

The menu is a delightful journey through Turkish cuisine, showcasing both familiar favorites and some lesser-known gems. Start your day with their Shakshuka/Menemen, a luscious blend of scrambled eggs, tomatoes, and sweet peppers served with warm, soft pide bread—comforting and robust, it’s a brunch dish that feels like a warm hug. Or sample the Breakfast Simit Sandwich stuffed with savory fillings like cured beef or avocado, each bite perfectly seasoned and satisfying.

Lunch and dinner at Simurgh are equally compelling. The Istanbul Plate is a palette-pleaser featuring assorted kofte kebabs, oven-baked potatoes, and a medley of smoky grilled shishito peppers accompanied by housemade ajvar and labneh that bursts with rich, tangy flavors. For something uniquely filling, the Cevapi Rice Bowl and Sabich Sandwich offer vibrant, layered tastes with ingredients like fried eggplant, hard boiled eggs, and bright herbaceous sauces such as ajvar, amba, and zhug. Each dish is crafted to highlight the spices and textures that define Mediterranean cooking.

No meal here is complete without indulging in their bakery’s signature desserts. The Baklava is thick and rich with perfectly crisp layers that shatter delightfully with each bite, balanced by lush, honeyed sweetness—a real standout that customers call "best ever." Equally heavenly is the Honey Cake with Berries, which pairs beautifully with their carefully brewed Turkish tea or the enchanting, fragrant Turkish coffee.

The atmosphere at Simurgh is warm and inviting, enhanced by attentive staff who patiently guide you through the menu, making it an ideal spot for both casual gatherings and special occasions. Though the seating is limited, it only adds to the intimate, neighborhood vibe that keeps locals coming back again and again.

So the lovely thing about Simurgh is its breads. I mean I always crave for nice and fresh authentic bread in the Bay Area but its not accessible easily. They have it. Enjoy their great Simit and the special fluffy Pita bread with their great Turkish breakfast.

Cevapi burger is absolutely delicious, filling, and not heavy or oily. But the real winner is the honey cake. Best I’ve ever had, nothing compares. And combined with the tea is just magical. I am very picky about Turkish tea, the leaves, the temperature, the steeping, the water, all affect the flavor, and this was delicious. Very impressive for high volume!

I went to Istanbul last summer and was on the hunt for a Turkish restaurant before my trip. Guess what? I stumbled upon this amazing place! I’ve been here at least six times, and it’s seriously the best brunch spot in Emeryville. I’ve had their shakshuka a few times, and you can’t go wrong with eggs and tomatoes! I’ve also tried their cevapi sandwich, which is super savory and pairs perfectly with their pide bread. My usual meal here is the Istanbul plate, which has a bunch of kofte kebabs served with pide bread, potatoes, slices of pide bread, and grilled shishito peppers (usually at least one of them is pretty spicy, but overall pretty mild). This is definitely one of my go-to brunch spots which I always sneak in a baklava in every order, and I’m there at least once a quarter now.

Such a delight. Specialize Turkish baked goods, dishes. Have an all day breakfast menus as well. We met up with friends here. This is the first time we visited, so everything is tempting. Limited seatings. Every one works here is so helpful, patiently explains everything. I can see why this is a local fa write. Food portions are large. They also have preboxed food you can purchase and take with you.

Fresh and delicious Turkish food! I got Borek and I never had Borek that is light and fluffy like this before. The accompanied salad goes very well. I asked a staff what I should get for a lighter meal and she got the right stuff for me. When it comes to the dessert, the blakava here is thick, rich, and still have the right crunchy texture from the outside. Plus it is big! Looking at the menu, I can see that this place is authentic and of course other dishes I saw around neighboring tables look all new and interesting to me. Definitely a place I want to come back and try other dishes!

The food was amazing. Good variety and amazing flavor. We got the lahmacun and the Turkish platter, both were fantastic.

We’ve been here several times because the breakfast is absolutely delicious — fresh, high-quality ingredients and generous portions. It’s one of the best breakfast spots we’ve tried! That said, the service could use some improvement. Orders always come out one by one, so my husband and I never actually get to enjoy our breakfast together at the same time. On a few occasions, our order was also brought out incorrectly, even though we showed a photo of it to avoid confusion. But the biggest concern for me is hygiene. There’s a lady who brings the orders to the tables, handles the kitchen items, and even opens doors — all while wearing the same gloves. That raises some food safety concerns. I really hope they can improve the service flow and pay more attention to proper kitchen hygiene. If they fix that, this place could easily be a five-star gem.
